There’s a saying amongst business owners.  “If you’re the smartest person in the room then you’re in the wrong room.”  It’s healthy to mix with people that you admire and aspire to emulate.  Networking events, trade meetings and social meet ups often see people drawn to kindred spirits who share life stories and ambitions.

Whilst it’s not always possible to interact with high achievers why not try to attend relevant talks, read books from your business heroes and generally try to raise your game.  Last weekend I took part in an event where there was an Iron Man Endurance event being staged.  The enthusiasm and professionalism from these athletes was contagious and helped all of us push through our various challenges across the day.

If you aim to improve your performance in small increments and learn from others then you’ll be in a strong position to improve your standing.  It’s fine to be comfortable with your lot however it’s important to avoid complacency in business and I feel this is the theme at the heart of the earlier quote.  In these changeable times we should check our ambition and motivation aligned to optimise meetings and events.
