Across January and February many of us are focused on achieving new year resolutions. Commonly this involves breaking bad routines whilst improving in other areas. It’s a good aspirational start to the year. However, are we being a little too hard on ourselves and are we guilty of trying to achieve too much in too short a time?
On Monday we welcomed Mark Dyble to altspace to discuss how we can all adopt better habits. Much of our lives are determined by deep routed routines and it’s critical in business to make the most of our helpful, productive habits. Mark has over 25 years of commercial management experience and runs the locally based SME Business Soultions. He’s always willing to introduce new measures which included buzzing in guests on the night and personally introducing himself ( one less job for me, thanks Mark !).
Here’s a short summary of my learnings from his entertaining talk.
Take small steps to reach your goals – this removes the likelihood of over committing to tasks which can lead to easy disappointment.
Work in a productive environment – attempt to avoid distractions in your day to help establish a positive routine. A private space / office to work will be more efficient than the kitchen table.
Use positive reinforcement to adopt new behaviour. Mark gave the example of combining a new habit of talking more to your team. Why not achieve this by asking after them on your way to the coffee machine?
Technology – Utilise this to help build positive routines and reward yourself. Use social media time as a treat and attempt to batch e-mail checks and mobile phone checks to specific times of the day.
