A media entrepreneur has swapped the London life to start a co-working business in south Manchester.

Altspace is an alternative working environment for Altrincham businesses.

Located on Stamford New Road it is the brainchild of Steve Upham, 42, who after 20 years of life in the capital, decided to move up north with his wife.

The business launched in January and was inspired by his work for Channel 4 and ITV.

He said: “Following a career working in media and the charity sector I began to research a business plan for an independent co-working office.

“I have always enjoyed meeting interesting business owners and decided to start up a company that could offer this group support and the opportunity to collaborate across a number of sectors.”

The 'co-working revolution' is coming to Manchester
Open 9am - 6pm on weekdays Altspace offers a six person meeting room, presentation suite and networking opportunities.

Asked why he thought the space would work outside the city centre he said: “The co-working movement is thriving across Europe and the US and offers an alternative to the isolation of working from home or facing a stressful commute into a city centre.

“My visits to a variety of venues, cafes and offices highlighted the benefits of working with a diverse range of people from different backgrounds and industries.

“I also learned that creative spaces can inspire individuals and businesses and took the decision to find a suitable location for a community focused coworking space.”

Rates cost £210 a month full time; part-time (3 days per week) is £155 a month; and the day rate is £14. These include free wifi and refreshments.

Asked why south Manchester was an obvious choice, he said: “Manchester and Trafford appealed to me further to meeting local people and freelancers at networking events and canvassing their opinions on business support.

“The concentration and variety of independent businesses in the borough reinforced my choice of location.

“ Altrincham appeared to be particularly suitable further to its transport links and vibrant market culture.”
